What is a kendama?

A kendama is a toy originally from Japan. It is meant to test your agility. It is a wooden handle with two cups and a spike to which a ball is attached by a thin string. The whole excluding the ball is called the “ken. The ball is called a “tama. The part of the ken that has the cups and the taper is called the sara.

You try to catch the ball in one of the cups in the most unique and challenging way possible. It came to Europe as early as the 18th century as a drinking game (you had to drink when you couldn’t catch the ball). Then Hamaji Egusa obtained a patent in 1920 to make the toy more widely known and to ensure quality for competitions.

It has now become so big that professional competitions are also organized here in Europe and the US to find out who the real kendama masters are. The ken

The ken is the piece where you hold it. This grip is large enough to exert various grips on and you can switch hands, for example. The sara
